1. Project title:Belasitsa Beyond Borders

Objectives and results of the action and role of LKMA in the Project:
Mount Belasitsa (Kerkini) lies in the triangle of the borders between Bulgaria, Greece and FYROM at the core of the Balkan Green Belt. It is characterized from unique biodiversity of sub-Mediterranean, Mediterranean and mountainous ecosystems. For this reason, it has been declared protected area with different protection regimes in Bulgaria and Greece. In FYROM there is no protection legislative status.
So, seeking the sustainable development of the region, this project aims to the cross-border cooperation. It focuses on ecological, social and economic aspects of the region. Its main effort is to inform the general public about the natural values of the mountain and the possibilities offered eg for ecotourism.
Role of LKMA in the Project:
Lake Kerkini Management Authority implemented in the following actions:
• International Camp for young people from 18 years old for 5 days in Kerkini.
• Exchange students, educational excursion for students from Bulgaria, FYROM and Greece to Lake Kerkini National Park.
• Seminar for professionals who deal with tourism on ecotourism in the area (behavior, services, promotion of local products, etc.)
• Contribution to the Production of information material concerning the area of the mountain Kerkini
• Contribution to the implementation of a Photo competition and exhibition
• Contribution to the implementation of the International Camps in Bulgaria and FYROM
• Excursion of travel agents to Bulgaria, FYROM and Greece

 

2. Project title: Safeguarding the Lesser White-fronted Goose fennoscandinavian population in key wintering and staying sites within the European flyway

Objectives and results of the action:
The main objectives of the project are:
• to reduce mortality rates which relate to hunting along the European flyway, considered to date as the most significant threat for the species
• to provide suitable foraging and roosting habitats for the species in wintering and staging grounds
• to increase knowledge and awareness of the species in wintering and staging grounds
• to maximize international co-operation and networking in countries hosting key wintering/staging grounds along the European flyway of the species

In order to succeed in the conservation of the LWfG, efforts require a flyway approach. Thus, the project involves eight partner organisations from four European countries along the flyway. The multi-national and multi-institutional partnership plays a key role in the project. The project will undertake concrete actions in seven NATURA 2000 sites in Greece, Bulgaria and Hungary.
Role of LKMA in the Project:
At Lake Kerkini the affiliated entity is the Management Authority, which has signed contract with the Hellenic Ornithological Society (01/10/2012) and is involved in the program by certain obligations. These are:
-Monitoring the herd of the Lesser White-fronted Goose and other related parameters
-Participation to the Smart Patrol System (SPS)
-Participation to the National Action Plan for the Lesser White-fronted Goose
-Participation to the events organization about the Program with the Hellenic Ornithological Society, leaflet distribution and others.
Also, the Management Authority offers valuable help, at any affiliated entity of the Program, as the Hellenic Agricultural Organisation “DEMETER”, Forest Research Institute, with the local Knowledge of the area of interest, in any action taking place.

 

3. Project title:Wetland Management and Dalmatian Pelican Conservation in the Mediterranean basin

Objectives and results of the action:

The overall objective of the Program is the conservation of Dalmatian pelicans and their habitat trough 4 complementary components. The pilot phase aims at assessing the current situation on each site, and thereby elaborate local actions plans.
The three sites are three remarkable wetlands, all listed as Wetlands of Intrernational Importance by the Ramsar Convention: Kerkini Lake National Park (pilot site), Skadar Lake National Park in Montenegro and Divjake-Karavasta National Park in Albania.
Role of LKMA in the Project:
At Lake Kerkini the Management Authority, which has signed contract with Noe Conservation (02/09/2014) and is involved in the program by certain obligations. LKMA is responsible for the implementation and coordination of specific activities of the Program as construction of wooden fences for reconstitution of reeds, monitoring of Dalmatian Pelican at Kerkini Lake National Park and to look for the most cost efficient way to implement these activities, to facilitate contacts between Noe and stakeholders of the Program and other.

4. Project title: Management and Operation of Protected Area of Lake Kerkini

Objectives and results of the action:
The main objectives of the project are:
4.1 The implementation of the monitoring program (environmental and anthropogenic parameters).The monitoring program includes the follow:
• Monitoring of the ornithofauna.
• Monitoring of the physicochemical parameters and climate data.
• Monitoring of important species of mammals.
• Monitor habitat types.
• Mapping of anthropogenic activities in the National Park – Monitoring dead animals on roads- Monitoring dead birds in wind park in the municipality of Sidirokastro.
• Monitoring Fish – Terrapins.

In addition, other actions of the Management Authority Lake Kerkini are:
• Ringing of Dalmatian Pelicans.
• Construction of platforms for pelicans and floating platforms for terns.
4.2 The implementation of the surveillance program of the protected area. The program intends to prevent and also to deal with those human activities that cause pressure on the protected area
4.3 The implementation of awareness program and promotion of the protected area. The Management Authority aims at the awareness of the local population, as well as the promotion of the National Park as a very important park not only nationally but also in a global level.
4.4 Administrative support of the operational program. The Management Authority has managerial capacity of type B for procurement projects and services.
4.5 The Management Authority has the obligation to implement a number of calls for services and supplies, in order to fulfill the requirements and goals of this project.

• Technical reports of the monitoring program
• Sheets declaration of expenditure and half-yearly project implementation reports.
• Equipment (jeep cars, scientific and laboratory instruments, monitoring equipment etc), supplies and reports.
